Falcons vs Eagles Live

The Atlanta Falcons face the Philadelphia Eagles on Thursday, Sept. 6 in Week 1 of the 2018 NFL season, opening up the year at Lincoln Financial Field.

NFL football will finally be in our lives in a meaningful way once again on Thursday night. The defending champion Philadelphia Eagles will welcome the Atlanta Falcons to Lincoln Financial Field for a rematch of the Divisional Round in last year’s playoffs. And, frankly, there’s not a whole lot that has changed for both the Falcons and Eagles since that time.

The Atlanta Falcons, led by quarterback Matt Ryan and wide receiver Julio Jones, meet the defending Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles, who will start backup quarterback Nick Foles in place of Carson Wentz, in an NFL Week 1 game on Thursday, September 6, 2018 (9/6/18) at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

For the Eagles, they are still waiting on star quarterback Carson Wentz to 100 percent recover from the torn ACL he suffered at the end of last year. Subsequently, Nick Foles — who did win this team a Super Bowl — will be the starting quarterback in Week 1. With Alshon Jeffery also out though, this Philly team might need to rely heavily on their defense to find success on Thursday.

Then there’s the Falcons, who are running it back with Matt Ryan, Julio Jones, Devonta Freeman and the generally same host of weapons. Perhaps the biggest addition, though, is rookie wide receiver Calvin Ridley. Pairing the first-round pick with Jones in the offense could make for a lethal duo. That is, of course, if Steve Sarkisian can coach the unit better than he did a season ago.

The Eagles will have Nick Foles under center as they did in the playoff matchup with Carson Wentz still out following knee surgery. Foles completed 23 of 30 passes and had 246 passing yards in the playoff win over the Falcons.

Alabama vs Louisville

Alabama vs Louisville : It’s not often an FCS team is favored when facing an FBS program, but in Northern Arizona’s opener against the UTEP Miners on Saturday — it is pretty close.

ESPN currently gives the Lumberjacks a 50.1 percent chance to beat the Miners on the road in El Paso, Texas. When looking at how UTEP’s 2017 season went, Northern Arizona’s chances make sense.

UTEP went winless last season with an 0-12 record and was ranked last out of 130 FBS programs in total yards of offense, offensive yards per game and points per game — scoring a mere 11.8 per game.

Defensively the Miners were tied for 12th worst, allowing 36.8 points per game and had the 12th worst rushing defense allowing 234.3 yards per game. The team’s best unit defensively was the defensive backfield as they had the 47th best passing defense in the FBS, giving up 212.3 yards per game.

Alabama vs Louisville: The Alabama Crimson Tide begin defense of their latest national title Saturday at 8 p.m. ET when they face the Louisville Cardinals at Camping World Stadium in Orlando, Florida. Alabama is a 24.5-point sportsbook favorite and the over-under for total points scored is 62. Before you make any Alabama vs. Louisville picks, listen to what SportsLine senior analyst Josh Nagel has to say. A Nevada-based expert with 20 years of experience in the sports wagering industry, Nagel has hit 60 percent of his bowl picks over the past two seasons. He came on strong at the end of last year with an undefeated run on his spread selections in the College Football Playoffs.

What’s more, he has had a keen eye for these two programs. Nagel boasts an impressive spread record of 8-1 in games involving these two clubs, including a 4-0 mark on Louisville. Now, Nagel has analyzed all the key details of Saturday’s game and released a confident point-spread selection, which he’s sharing over at SportsLine.

Louisville vs Alabama

Louisville vs Alabama: Alabama starts its college football season with a game against Louisville in Week 1. Like every other Tide season-opener in the last half-decade.

Alabama, once again, is the presumptive favorite to win
the national championship. Louisville will have the chance to derail
that narrative — but the Cardinals will have to do it while breaking in a
brand new quarterback.

Louisville lost 2016 Heisman Trophy winner Lamar Jackson to the NFL this spring, leaving the offense in the hands of Jawon Pass — a redshirt sophomore who looked solid in limited clean-up duty behind Jackson last fall. Pass’s first start may be the toughest of his career, as he’ll face a Crimson Tide defense that ranked first in the nation in scoring defense (11.9 points allowed per game) and total defense. While Bama may have lost eight players to the 2018 NFL Draft, Nick Saban’s pipeline of elite blue chip recruits just means a new class will get the chance to smash Pass into powder in Week 1.

Alabama vs. Louisville news:

  • What can Louisville expect from Jawon Pass? A stable pocket passer who can also move the chains on the ground.

Alabama is home to this year’s preseason Heisman Trophy favorite — and it’s a player who’s never even started a game. Tagovailoa saved the Tide in last year’s National Championship Game to kick off a hype train currently screeching down the tracks and toward the rest of the SEC. His team’s string of 2017 blowouts gave him plenty of opportunities to spell Jalen Hurts in garbage time, and the then-freshman shined, throwing 11 touchdowns in just 77 attempts and, eventually, leading his team to a comeback victory in overtime on college football’s biggest stage.

Now Alabama will turn to him as its starter, knowing
Hurts lurks in the background in case his breakout 2017 proves
unsustainable. Tagovailoa made some freshman mistakes last fall, but
another year of practice against the Tide’s never-ending supply of blue
chip defenders should have rounded off some of his rough edges. Can he
earn his status as Heisman favorite? We’ll see against Louisville.

Alabama vs. Louisville prediction:

This game would have been a burner with Jackson behind center for the Cards, but throwing a first-time starter behind center against Alabama’s meat grinder of a defense seems …cruel. S&P+ sees this one as a 17.7-point win for the Tide.

Washington vs Auburn

Washington vs Auburn: Saturday, Sep 1, 2018, 1:30 AM, Espn/Foxsports Tv Live, On Reddit, Prediction, pick, odds, line, TV channel, live stream, watch online

No. 6 Washington will travel across the country to take on No. 9 Auburn in the Chick-fil-A Kickoff Game on Saturday afternoon in the only top-10 matchup of Week 1. Led by coach Chris Petersen, the Huskies hope to kick off a march back to the College Football Playoff — an event they qualified for after the 2016 season. Meanwhile, Gus Malzahn and the Tigers are looking to rebound after losing two straight to end last season, including an SEC Championship Game loss to Georgia that kept them out of the CFP.

The Huskies are led by veteran quarterback Jake Browning and running back Myles Gaskin — two key players during the 2016 playoff run. The Tigers have a star under center themselves in the form of junior Jarrett Stidham.

What will happen Saturday afternoon in Atlanta? Let’s preview the biggest game of opening weekend.
Viewing information

Date: Saturday, Sept. 1 | Time: 3:30 p.m. ET
Location: Mercedes-Benz Stadium — Atlanta
TV: ABC | Live stream: WatchESPN
Storylines

Washington: The Huskies were tabbed to win the Pac-12 at the league’s media days in July, and the experience Petersen brings back is a big reason why. In addition to Browning and Gaskin, three of five starters along the offensive line return. The veteran secondary is led by Taylor Rapp and Byron Murphy, and the front seven is loaded with upperclassmen. Simply put, nothing — including the cross-country trip and a presumably Auburn-heavy crowd — will rattle this group. Gaskin and the offensive line have to get things going on the ground to set the tone. If they do, Browning is fully capable of working his magic off play-action and picking apart the Tigers secondary.

Auburn: Stidham has plenty of weapons around him, including receivers Ryan Davis, Darius Slayton and Nate Craig-Myers. The question, though, is the running game. Kam Martin will get the first shot at running back with JaTarvious Whitlow providing support behind him. Can they get going behind a new-look offensive line? Not only is that a question in this game, but the entire season for Malzahn’s crew. Defensively, the Tigers might have the best defensive line outside of Clemson. Not only are they deep, but ultra-versatile, allowing defensive coordinator Kevin Steele to get creative with formations depending on situations. The back end is in good hands with Jamel Dean, Jeremiah Dinson and Javaris Davis, which will come in handy Saturday vs. the Huskies.
Prediction, picks

While the quarterbacks, and skill players in general, will dominate the headlines heading in to this one, it will be won or lost in the trenches — particularly when Washington has the ball. Led by Derrick Brown, Dontavius Russell and Marlon Davidson, the Tigers will win the battle against Huskies defensive line more times than not, disrupt plays behind the line and get in Browning’s face early and often. Keep an eye on “Buck” edge rushers Nick Coe and T.D. Moultry to make big impacts off the edge. Pick: Auburn (-2.5)

Texas vs Maryland

Texas vs Maryland: Football Game The Rocky Mountain Showdown kicks off Saturday between Texas and the Maryland Live.

The Maryland Terrapins pulled a shocker on the Texas Longhorns in last season’s opener, and shoot for a repeat performance when the teams open the 2018 season Saturday afternoon on “neutral” turf at FedExField. Where should the smart betting money align itself on this contest?

College football point spread:
The Longhorns opened as 10.5-point favorites, according to sportsbooks
monitored by OddsShark. (Line updates and matchup report)

College football betting pick, via OddsShark computer: 31.4-11.8 Longhorns (College football picks on every game)

Why the Texas Longhorns can cover the spread

The Longhorns return 14 starters this
season after going 7-6 straight-up and 8-5 against the spread last
season, their first campaign under head coach Tom Herman. Texas started
4-5 last year, then won three of its last four games, including a bowl
victory over Missouri. Also, the Longhorns lost four games by a total of
15 points, which means they were only a few plays away from winning
nine or 10 games.

Seven starters return on offense, led by a
couple of quarterbacks with starting experience and three along the
offensive line. And seven starters return on a defense that limited
opponents to 366 yards per game last season, including six of last
year’s top nine tacklers. Texas actually struggled at home last season,
but went 4-2 SU and 5-1 ATS outside of Austin.

Why the Maryland Terrapins can cover the spread

The Terrapins return 13 starters this
year from a team that finished 4-8 last year. Maryland reached 4-4 last
season but lost its last four games, as injuries took a tough toll.
Eight starters are back on offense, including two quarterbacks with
starting experience, last year’s top two rushers and the entire
offensive line.

And while only five starters are back on
defense, they include four of last year’s top-seven tacklers. Plus the
Terps added a couple of big-time transfers on that side of the ball.
Maryland just beat the Longhorns in last year’s season opener 51-41 in
Austin. The Terrapins ran the ball for 263 yards that day in winning
outright as 19-point underdogs.

Smart betting pick

Texas is shooting to make the leap into
contention in the Big 12 this season, and may just do it. Maryland, on
the other hand, is opening this season under a cloud, with head coach DJ
Durkin on administrative leave. The Terrapins are also operating under a
new offensive coordinator, with a new system, which means that unit
might struggle early this season. Smart money here likes the Longhorns.

College football betting trends

The total has gone over in seven of Maryland’s last nine games.

Maryland is 2-6 ATS in its last eight games.

Texas is 9-3 ATS in its last 12 games.

Southern vs TCU

Oregon State vs Ohio State: Football Game The Rocky Mountain Showdown kicks off Saturday between Oregon State and the Ohio State.

When No. 16 TCU opens its season against Southern University on Saturday morning at Amon G. Carter Stadium in Fort Worth, Texas, there will be little doubt about the eventual outcome.

But the Horned Frogs are happy to be able to beat up on someone other than themselves and have plenty to gain from what amounts to a scrimmage that counts and gets them off on the right foot.

The contest is an opportunity to continue the development of sophomore quarterback Shawn Robinson, who is the latest in the line of TCU’s dual-threat signal-callers. It’s also a chance for one or two players out of the Horned Frogs’ stable of running backs to announce himself as the No. 1 main option moving forward.

And there’s a chance for monster defensive end Ben Banogu to begin his proliferation of sacks and tackles for a loss, basically using the Jaguars as fodder for the challenges to come the rest of the year.

TCU and Southern are meeting for the first time. The Horned Frogs are facing an opponent from the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) for just the third time in their history after defeating Jackson State 63-0 last season and Grambling State 56-0 in their 2012 season opener.

Venerable coach Gary Patterson said Monday that he’s relieved to have his Horned Frogs back on a somewhat normal practice schedule and that his players are ready to get into game action, but they aren’t overlooking Southern.

“We have been banged up,” Patterson said. “I feel a lot better now. … We are tired of hitting each other, excited to play a ball game and get into the season. We’re playing a Southern team I think that does a lot of good things. They do a nice job coaching. They do a lot of things that cause you problems. We’ve taken them very seriously.”

TCU’s offensive line has been one of the biggest questions going into the season as four key contributors from last year’s team are now in NFL camps. But Patterson continued to heap praise on the unit and its work in preseason camp.

“Our offensive line, I’ll be honest, has been the big surprise,” Patterson said. “They’ve really gotten better. We still have to keep getting better at one of the tackles. I won’t say which one.”

Southern made it official and named quarterback John Lampley the starter for the season opener at TCU, coach Dawson Odums announced on Monday.

The move comes with little surprise after Odums named Lampley the front-runner in the three-person race early last week. The 6-foot-2 sophomore from Georgia will get his first career start against the No. 16 team in the country.

“We have three very good quarterbacks,” Odums said. “John is just slightly above those guys from a consistency standpoint and that’s really what we look for out of that quarterback position.”

Southern (which went 7-4 last season) is a traditional powerhouse in the SWAC and in the HBCU ranks in general. Southern couldn’t participate in the SWAC Championship or the Celebration Bowl however, due to NCAA academic progress rate violations.

The Jaguars’ first two games (at TCU and at Louisiana Tech) are tough, but the rest of the schedule is winnable if this team finds its stride and can stay healthy.

Florida Atlantic vs Oklahoma

Florida Atlantic vs Oklahoma: Football Game The Rocky Mountain Showdown kicks off Saturday between Florida Atlantic and the Oklahoma.

In one of the more underrated matchups for Saturday’s college football slate, Lane Kiffin’s Florida Atlantic Owls will travel to Norman to take on the Oklahoma Sooners at 12:00 p.m. ET. Will the game live up to its shootout hype?

Game Snapshot

151 Florida Atlantic Owls at 152 Oklahoma Sooners

12:00 p.m. ET, Saturday, September 1, 2018

Gaylord Family – Oklahoma Memorial Stadium, Norman, OK

Public Betting Trends

According to oddsmakers from online sports book BetNow.eu, the Sooners are 21-point favorites to beat the Owls. The total, meanwhile, sits at 72 points. As of this writing, 70% of the public betting tickets wagered on this matchup are on the Sooners.

Florida Atlantic Owls

FAU HC Lane Kiffin left open the possibility that the Owls could play two quarterbacks in their season-opener versus Oklahoma. “We’d like to already have had it done. It’s not done. Could it be two (quarterbacks)? I don’t know that. We’ve got to always do what’s best for the team,” Kiffin said. The two main combatants, here, are De’Andre Johnson and former OU QB Chris Robison, with Rafe Peavey (just transferred over from SMU) also in the mix. Just about everything about Kiffin’s start to life in Boca Raton has gone off swimmingly, but the team’s not yet found its golden-armed gunslinger. A year ago, Kiffin trotted out Daniel Parr as his starter to open the campaign, but he shifted over to Jason Driskel after three games. Driskal proved uninspiring. We’re probably most intrigued by Robison in the current competition.

Oklahoma Sooners

Oklahoma named redshirt junior QB Kyler Murray their starting quarterback for the upcoming campaign. Murray (5’10/195) will make his starting debut with the Sooners in an endlessly intriguing season-opening showdown against FAU a week from Saturday. He beat out Austin Kendall to win the job. It’s been a long, winding road for the former four-star recruit, who initially signed with Texas A&M as part of the 2015 class before opting to transfer out at the end of his true freshman season. He then landed in Oklahoma, where he played backup to Heisman winner Baker Mayfield during the most recent campaign. He’s an absolutely electric athlete, one whom Mayfield has called the fastest on the team. Murray will play one season of football in Norman before embarking on a professional baseball career with the Oakland A’s, who drafted him ninth overall earlier this summer.

Betting Trends

Florida Atlantic

The Owns have covered the spread in eight of their last 10 games overall.

Oklahoma

The Sooners are 11-2 at the betting window in their last 13 home games.

Prediction

The Owls boast one of the best running backs in the nation in Devin Singletary and while the passing game has some new faces, Kiffin’s squad figures to be extremely talented from that regard as well. FAU does return 10 starters on defense but Tony Pecoraro’s unit will be more aggressive this year, which could lead to some big plays allowed early in the season. On the other side, the Sooners begin life without Baker Mayfield and there could be some early-season bumps. That said, Rodney Anderson and Kyler Murray should put up plenty of points on Saturday to help push this one over the total.
